Ramping up the "sport" in "sports utility vehicle," Ford will add a high-performance model on to the Ford Explorer lineup. At this point in time Midway Ford Truck Center can't say when exactly the Explorer variant will arrive at 7601 NE 38th Street Kansas City, MO 64161 or how much it will cost, but that doesn't mean we don't have plenty of other details to share. In fact, we have lots.
Officially dubbed the "Ford Explorer Sport," the SUV will grab power from the same 3.5-liter EcoBoost found in variants of the Ford Taurus, Ford Flex and Ford F-150. Fitted to Explorer insides, this powertrain offers up 350 horsepower and somewhere around 350 pounds-feet of torque.
Of course, just because the Ford Explorer Sport boasts more enjoyable performance, doesn't mean the model can't still handle a heavy load. Carl Widmann, Vehicle Engineering Manager, explains, "Explorer Sport makes no compromises...We've delivered an SUV that delivers great dynamics and performance - while towing up to 5,000 pounds."1
How did Ford do it? you ask. By beefing up both the suspension and chassis, adding in a slew of comfort and convenience features and perfectly calibrating the Terrain Management System. Part of the performance upgrades include improved handling, a solid-mounted electric power-assisted steering rack with a faster ratio and larger brakes for shorter stopping.
